Things are beginning to settle down. It's now mid October, not the beginning of September. Our school friends will have half term in about ten days. We're not 'brand new' home educators anymore.
I've noticed that we've settled down a bit. Isaiah now does his literacy, at first he refused point blank because he hated it at school. I bought a workbook anyway, a cheerful one with a pumpkin on the front and not too challenging, and ignored him, and after a few days he got bored and picked it up and did it. He now just gets on with it, it's not really an issue, although he still isn't keen on writing a great deal.
The other new thing, just this week in fact, is that we've stopped just consolidating stuff the kids already know and they're willingly taking on challenges. Isaiah had the playdough out making little pies to understand fractions. Martha wrote a poem with metaphors in it, and really seemed to get a grasp of what they are for, something she would have hated if it had been 'homework' when at school.
Oh and we braved the local post office in the day, grunting when asked 'not at school?' The staff are lovely in there, but we had a bad experience in the library the fist week, a librarian harshly told Flossie to 'put that down' when she was just reading a dvd cover! We wrote to complain but lost our confidence a bit, going to need a thick skin I think if we're not going to hide away like moles all week in the daytime. The centre of town is ok because it's full of skivers anyway!
My friend is still hanging on in there, or at least he was yesterday when I got news. In fact he was astonishing the doctors by not needing his oxygen mask on and by speaking a few words. Hope he's not suffering today.
